Why Rest Is the New Hustle

By: Hope Shenk

I’m writing this from a local coffee shop, watching the morning rush unfold. Students hurry in, grabbing fuel for a day of classes. Professionals anxiously check their watches, already thinking about their first meeting and their full day. The baristas move with a practiced, frantic energy, espresso, and shouted names. It’s a perfect picture of our modern "hustle culture."

Then something interesting happened. As the line disappeared and things slowed down, the baristas stopped for a moment. They looked at each other, took a deep breath, and started clapping. It was a small way to acknowledge their teamwork and signal that it was time to reset before the next wave of customers.

This simple act beautifully illustrates a profound truth we often forget: rest isn't the opposite of work; it's a vital part of it. Our society praises the grind, the sleepless nights, and the relentless pursuit of more. But what if the most productive and spiritually fulfilling thing we could do is to slow down? It’s time to make a case for why rest is the new hustle.

The Cost of Constant Hustle

We live in a culture that wears burnout like a badge of honor. The "rise and grind" mentality suggests that our value is directly tied to our productivity. We’re led to believe that if we’re not constantly moving, achieving, and producing, we’re falling behind. This pressure is not only mentally and emotionally exhausting but also spiritually damaging.

The relentless pursuit of productivity can lead to:

  • Anxiety and Depression: The pressure to always be "on" creates a state of chronic stress, which is a major contributor to anxiety and mood disorders.

  • Physical Health Problems: Lack of rest compromises the immune system, increases the risk of heart disease, and can lead to chronic fatigue.

  • Spiritual Emptiness: When we prioritize worldly success above all else, we can lose sight of our divine purpose and our relationship with God. Our work becomes an idol, a false source of identity and security.

The Divine Mandate for Rest

Rest is not a modern self-care trend; it’s a concept woven into the fabric of creation. In the very first chapter of Genesis, after six days of creating the heavens and the earth, God rested. He didn’t rest because He was tired. He rested to establish a pattern, a holy rhythm for all of creation to follow. He sanctified the Sabbath, setting it apart as a day of rest and worship.

Jesus himself modeled the importance of rest. Despite the constant demands on His time and the crowds that followed Him, He frequently withdrew to quiet places to pray and recharge. Mark 6:31 tells us, “Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’”

If God the Creator and Jesus the Savior prioritized rest, how can we believe we are exempt? Embracing rest is an act of obedience and worship. It demonstrates our trust that God is in control and that our worth is not defined by our output.

How to Embrace a Rhythm of Rest

Reclaiming rest in a hustle-driven world requires intention and practice. It’s about more than just getting enough sleep; it’s about creating space in our lives for our minds, bodies, and spirits to be renewed.

1. Reclaim the Sabbath

The Sabbath is a gift, not a burden. It’s a weekly invitation to step away from our work and worries and enter into God’s peace. This doesn't have to look the same for everyone, but the principle is universal: set aside one day a week for rest, worship, and connection.

  • Disconnect: Put away your work email and turn off notifications.

  • Worship: Engage with your church community, whether in person or online.

  • Delight: Spend time on activities that refresh your soul—a walk in nature, quality time with family, reading, or creative pursuits.

2. Practice Daily Stillness

Just as Jesus withdrew for moments of quiet prayer, we can incorporate small pockets of stillness into our daily routines. This could be as simple as starting your day with a few minutes of silent prayer, taking a mindful walk during your lunch break, or ending your day with scripture and reflection. These small moments can break the cycle of frantic energy and re-center your heart on what truly matters.

3. Listen to Your Body

Pay attention to the signals your body sends you. Fatigue, irritability, and frequent illness are often signs that you’re pushing too hard. Learn to say "no" to extra commitments when you feel overwhelmed. Taking care of your physical health is a form of spiritual stewardship.

4. Find Rest in Community

Find your rhythm of grace

The baristas at the coffee shop found strength in their shared moment of rest. We were also designed for the community. Surround yourself with people who support your well-being and encourage a balanced life. Be vulnerable about your struggles with burnout and allow others to support you in prayer and practical help.
