Life in the Elevator: Reflections on Grief, Joy, and Shared Journeys
By: Hope Shenk
Life is full of ups and downs, transitions, and unexpected stops. Sometimes we move forward with hope and excitement; other times, we are weighed down by grief or uncertainty. But no matter what floor we are headed to, we often find ourselves sharing space with others whose stories intersect with ours, even if only for a moment.
When the Doors Closed: A Moment of Deep Grief
Two years ago, I stood in a hospital elevator with a heart heavy from loss. My grandfather had just passed away, and as the doors shut, it felt as though time stopped. The world outside kept moving, with nurses rushing to help patients, visitors choosing floors, and people laughing softly or waiting quietly. But inside, I was suspended in grief, carrying a story no one in that elevator could see.
In that small space, surrounded by strangers, I felt the weight of how differently we all experience life. Some people were visiting loved ones, some were starting new chapters, and some, like me, were saying goodbye.
Returning to the Same Elevator: A Shift in Perspective
Not long ago, I found myself back in that very same elevator. This time, my heart was in a different place. As the elevator began to move, I noticed something I had missed before. This elevator is a profound symbol of life itself.
Every time the doors open, new people step in, each with their own joys, anxieties, burdens, or celebrations. Some are heading up to meet a newborn baby with eyes full of hope. Others are traveling down after receiving difficult news. In those brief moments, we share a destination, even if our reasons for being there are vastly different.
What We Carry: The Quiet Stories Around Us
Being in that elevator reminded me how often we stand shoulder to shoulder with people whose stories we will never fully know. We move through the world assuming we are alone in our emotions, but the truth is that everyone carries something, including grief, love, fear, anticipation, relief, or gratitude.
There is a quiet comfort in realizing this. Even though our paths may only cross for a moment, we are connected by the simple fact that we are all navigating the unpredictable ride of life.
Holding Space for One Another
The elevator taught me the importance of presence, not just physical presence, but emotional awareness. Sometimes the most meaningful support we can offer is simply sharing space, acknowledging that we do not know what someone else is going through, and choosing compassion anyway.
Whether someone is celebrating or mourning, whether they are rising or falling, every journey is valid. Every emotion is real.
