A New Year, A New Start
By: Hope Shenk
As the year winds down, it’s hard not to reflect. Maybe you’re proud of how far you’ve come. Maybe you’re disappointed. Maybe you’re just tired.
New Year’s has a way of turning the volume up on our expectations: new goals, new habits, new you. But what if this year, the “fresh start” didn’t have to feel like pressure?
What if it could be gentle, honest, and sustainable?
Why New Year’s Can Feel Heavy
For a lot of people, the end of the year brings up more than motivation. It can bring up:
Regret over what didn’t happen
Grief over what changed (or who you lost)
Anxiety about what’s coming
Comparison (“Everyone else seems to be thriving”)
Exhaustion from trying to hold it all together
If that’s you, you’re not alone, and you’re not failing. You’re human.
The Problem With “All-or-Nothing” Resolutions
Traditional resolutions often sound like:
“I’m going to fix my life.”
“I’m going to stop feeling anxious.”
“I’m going to be more disciplined.”
“I’m going to finally get it together.”
But when we set goals from a place of shame, we usually end up in one of two places:
Burnout
Giving up
Real change tends to happen when we start with compassion, not criticism.
A Better Way to Enter the New Year: Small, Meaningful Shifts
Instead of asking, “What should I change?” try asking:
What do I need more of this year?
What do I need less of?
What’s one thing I can do that supports my peace?
What’s one boundary that would protect my mental health?
Sometimes the most powerful “resolution” isn’t a dramatic overhaul. It’s a small decision you keep making.
Here are a few examples of gentle, realistic shifts:
“I will practice saying no without over-explaining.”
“I will take one step toward help instead of trying to carry it alone.”
“I will stop waiting until I feel ‘ready’ to start.”
“I will choose progress over perfection.”
If You’re Feeling Stuck, Start Here
If you’re not sure where to begin, try this simple reflection:
1. Name what was hard this year. Not to spiral, just to be honest.
2. Name what you survived. Give yourself credit for what you carried.
3. Name what you want to carry into the new year. A habit? A relationship? A renewed faith? A healthier rhythm?
4. Name what you want to release. A pattern, a fear, a belief about yourself that no longer fits.
You don’t need a perfect plan. You just need a starting point.
A Faith-Based Reminder
If you’re entering the New Year with uncertainty, it can help to remember: you don’t have to have it all figured out to take the next step.
God often works through process, through growth, healing, and daily dependence. You can set goals, yes. But you can also rest in the truth that your worth isn’t measured by your productivity.
Therapy Can Help You Start the Year With Clarity
Sometimes what we call “lack of discipline” is actually:
Anxiety
Depression
Unresolved grief
Trauma responses
Burnout
A nervous system that’s been in survival mode
Therapy can help you understand what’s really going on beneath the surface, and give you tools to move forward with support, not shame.
